How many career renaissances has Demi Moore had by this point? At least three? That’s three more than most people. Especially people who appear in their first films before they turn 20. She was 28 when Ghost was released, and she already felt like a movie star. Today she’s an institution. Based on last year’s Substance, you could make the case that she’s a genre.
Whoopi Goldberg’s career is, in its own way, just as unique. And REWIND has always considered Patrick Swayze to be one of our pole-stars. His willingness to invest every role with seriousness and empathy, no matter how goofy, endeared him to us instantly.
And Ghost is a little bit goofy. On paper, there’s no way Ghost holds together as a movie. Spoiler alert: one of the romantic leads is a ghost, and the other one isn’t. Typically this poses an insurmountable problem for a love story. But there are a few exceptions, Ghost being one, because for some storytellers the concept of a love that can overcome even the final curtain that separates the living from the other side is too powerful to resist. In this case the storyteller was Jerry Zucker, of the team of Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker (who made e.g. Airplane! and Naked Gun). Broad comedy, romance, even a little bit of horror — they don’t make movies like Ghost anymore. They definitely don’t shoot movies in New York like this anymore. Our loss.
