Sometimes the best way to examine the stories a culture tells about itself is to ask someone outside of the culture. In 1966, Americans had mostly had their fill of cowboys. The grandeur and romance of the Western had long worn thin. But Sergio Leone’s vision of American fables of the wild West (and Enrico Morricone’s iconic score) cast our history in a very different light than American westerns did. Clint Eastwood (“Blondie”), Eli Wallach (Tuco), and Lee Van Cleef (“Angel Eyes”) are self-interested, unsympathetic desperadoes whose lust for gold leaves them amoral at best and sadistic at worst. Seems like a more realistic vision of the old West than Tom Mix and Roy Rogers. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly ask the viewer new questions: what’s life really like for an outlaw? What evils can greed drive a decent person to do? Who believes in heroes? And how good is “Good”?
FILM TALK: Guests are invited to stick around after the screening for a post-show Film Talk and audience Q&A with Professor Gregg Perkins, filmmaker and Chair of the Department of Film, Animation and New Media at the University of Tampa. Film Talks are included with movie admission.
