Take a look at the runtime of this baby one more time and then, before you buy tickets, mentally budget for a bigger concessions purchase than normal. You’re going to get hungry. But having done that, definitely buy your tickets, because the experience of seeing an epic historical drama like Doctor Zhivago in a historical cinema like ours is not to be missed.
Director David Lean was an epic historical drama specialist, having transitioned mid-career from doing Dickens adaptations and romantic dramas to films like The Bridge on the River Kwai, Lawrence of Arabia and this one. To recreate the scale of the Boris Pasternak novel, Zhivago required the full-scale recreation of Moscow at the time of the Russian revolution in Spain (and Canada, and a little bit of Finland), shooting most of the winter scenes outside with real snow. Omar Sharif, Alec Guinness, Julie Christie and Geraldine Chaplin are brought together and torn apart repeatedly as the war wages around them — but you’re not here for the romance plot. You’re here to see early 20th century Russia in all its sweeping majesty and cruel brutality. Get comfy.
