Join us for an intimate evening of conversation and cuisine with features reporter and radio presenter Lucie Cutting, host of Sundays on ABC Radio Hobart and ABC Northern Tasmania.
Lucie honed her storytelling and interview skills through the co-creation of The Pin, an online platform exploring Australian stories of race, culture and identity, now archived by the National Library of Australia. With a background in Australian History, Earth Science and experience in libraries and archives, Lucie brings a unique and thoughtful lens to the stories she uncovers. She has a keen interest in narratives that delve into Australian identity and our place in the world.
In 2023, Lucie stumbled upon mention of a Japanese movie, filmed in lutruwita/Tasmania, that had a huge impact on Japan-Australia relations, but whose impact had largely been lost to history. It was the beginning of extensive research that led to Lucie speaking with talent in Australia, Japan and the United States, and her rediscovery of the house built for the film in a paddock in rural Tasmania.
The film is Tasmania Story, and the story behind the article, shortlisted for a Tasmanian journalism award, is as compelling as the final published piece. During this exclusive event, Lucie will speak about her extensive research, support from translators for interviews, and the stories that came from researching and writing about Tasmania Story. She will revisit the interviews done for the article and share additional stories from her research for the film and subsequent articles on Tasmania–Japan relations.
This special dinner will be held in a private room at the Ball and Chain Grill. The ticket price includes a two-course set menu showcasing the finest local produce (see menu options below).
Drinks will be available for purchase separately on the night.
We look forward to celebrating this memorable evening with our fellow members, friends and Japan enthusiasts. Don't miss this opportunity to hear firsthand from one of Tasmania’s most engaging voices in storytelling and journalism.
The cost is just $57 for members or $65 for non-members.
