What is it about fin de siècle Paris that keeps us coming back? Moulin Rouge!, director Baz Luhrmann’s garish, bonkers jukebox-musical love story and follow-up to the garish, bonkers Romeo + Juliet, comes out in May of 2001, which might be the high-water mark for dismal, nothing-ever-happens cultural ennui in America. And at least some of the appeal of stories like Moulin Rouge! lies in the fact that things were happening. Bumming around Paris in 1900, you really could run into Toulouse-Lautrec (John Leguizamo, The Pest), Emile Zola, Pablo Picasso and the Lumiére brothers while watching Jane Avril (here fictionalized as Satine and played by Nicole Kidman) dance.
But just like Romeo + Juliet, tragedy awaits. The good times can’t last. Satine, having fallen in love with the bohemian Christian (Ewan McGregor), must betray her feelings to protect his life. She is desired by the evil Duke of Monroth, whose wealth and power could rescue the Moulin Rouge itself. And her own life is in even more danger than Christian’s. Is it true that love can conquer all? If so, how soon?
FILM TALK: Guests are invited to stick around after the screening for a post-show Film Talk and audience Q&A with Foster Hirsch, film historian and author of Hollywood and the Movies of the Fifties. Film Talks are included with movie admission.
