"This isn’t nostalgia. It’s a call to remember what we’re capable of - and what still lives beneath the surface."
1988. A new youth culture explodes across Britain. Hundreds of thousands of young people gather in fields, squats, and warehouses, dancing through the night to a sound no one had heard before - acid house. It wasn’t just a party. It was a revolution.
But over time, that story was reduced to superstar DJs, tabloid panic, and Ibiza superclubs. The real heart of the movement, the people who built it, lived it, and risked everything for it, was pushed to the margins.
'88: The Untold Story of a Revolution' is the latest book from DJ and writer Kate Magic reclaiming the ecstatic, political, and spiritual roots of the UK rave movement. Kate was there in those early heady days, and subsequently spent a long time asking herself, "What really happened?" This book is her attempt to answer that question, drawing on interviews with nearly 100 people who were there too, in the fields and the basements, hands in the air.
To commemorate almost a year since its publication, we're celebrating with an autumnal book tour with dates from We Out Here and Hastings to Brighton, Manchester and London seeing us until late 2025.
For our Hastings date, we’re delighted to welcome esteemed author and journalist C.J. Stone, who will join Kate for an enlightening conversation on the free party scene and the spiritual roots of the rave movement. Drawing on Kate’s archival research featured in her book, and C.J. Stone’s Fierce Dancing, soon to be reissued in October 2025, the discussion promises to be both insightful and inspiring.
Now is the perfect time for this conversation - join us and be a part of it.
This is a free event, with the option to support the book tour by choosing a £5 donation ticket. Your contribution helps cover the costs of self-publishing and making these events possible, with every penny going directly towards the tour. We’re deeply grateful for your support.
