On December 11, 2025, the Mawson’s Huts Foundation will host a special evening at Hadley’s Orient Hotel in Hobart, recreating the historic luncheon held on December 1, 1911, when Douglas Mawson and the men of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition 1911-14 gathered before departing for Antarctica.
Our event, Reimagining Mawson’s Lunch: An Evening Honouring Antarctic Legacy will see Hadley’s chef recreate the original lunch menu with a modern culinary twist, inspired by the occasion that launched Australia’s first homegrown scientific expedition to the frozen continent.
But this night is not just about looking back - it’s also about celebrating how far we have come.
We are teaming up with the Antarctic Women’s Network to celebrate Mawson’s legacy, and the roles women have played in Antarctica and continue playing as we move forward.
Designed as an intimate heritage experience, this special evening is limited to only 60 guests — ensuring a truly personal and memorable night.
Highlights of the evening will include:
*A five-course fine-dining experience set in one of Hobart’s most iconic heritage venues.
*Short addresses from Hadley’s Head Chef on the creative inspiration behind the evening’s reimagined heritage dishes.
*Speaker presentations and performances on various topics relating to Mawson, the AAE 1911-14, and women’s experiences in Antarctica.
*A silent auction of unique Antarctic items and memorabilia.
All proceeds will go directly to supporting the Mawson’s Huts Foundation efforts.
