~ DESCRIPTION ~
With systems of oppression and restricted agency dominating the world around us, it is critical to the human experience to find personal contrast while maintaining peaceful understandings with others. ‘Divergent Directions’ brings together 3 works that follow conventional expectations, whilst each breaking away from controlling standards within the context of clarinet performance.
Margaret Sutherland’s ‘Sonata for Clarinet and Piano’ journeys through intervallic extrapolations in the standardised sonata form, requiring an open mind to change direction at any point.
In its innovative techniques and dedication to Sebastian, Pierce Tom’s Alone receives its second public performance, combining both voice and clarinet into the one piece and everchanging between the two instruments of one performer.
Claude Debussy’s exquisite ‘Premiére Rhapsodie’ concludes the programme. Sublime delicacy of French Impressionism is contrasted with sudden twists and turns through intricate dialogue between clarinet and piano, with an awe-inspiring epic finish.
Acting as their final open recital in their Bachelor of Music (Unit FCA312), ‘Divergent Directions’ is a culmination of Sebastian Allen’s study of Classical Clarinet at the University of Tasmania’s Conservatorium of Music. Head of Discipline (Music) Dr. Arabella Teniswood-Harvey supports on piano in this eclectic performance of contemporary Australian and French repertoire for clarinet.
Join Sebastian and Arabella on Wednesday the 12th of November for 25 minutes of ‘Divergent Directions’.
This event is not ticketed, but registration via response to facebook event/contact with the organiser is mandatory. Please ensure to arrive by 12.40pm in order to begin the performance on time.
