Infernal Affairs - Movie & Talkback with Sam Shapiro

Sam Shapiro, co-curator of the series, has told us about the movie :
Infernal Affairs is the only film in the series made after Hong Kong’s reunification with China in 1997. Undoubtedly it contains allusions to the “handover” and its traumatic effect upon millions of citizens. Loss of identity and betrayal of trust are the film’s primary themes, taken to almost unendurable levels in this tale of embedded “moles” within the police force and criminal underworld. Co-directed by Andrew Lau and Alan Mak, Infernal Affairs was a huge box-office smash in 2002, sweeping the Hong Kong Film Awards (the “Golden Horse”) and spawning a series of sequels. Martin Scorsese adapted it for his 2006 Oscar-winner The Departed, but that Boston-set epic suffered from bad accents and bloat. Infernal Affairs, on the other hand, sizzles for 100 breathless minutes, its multiple shocks and revelations snapping together finally with the force of a sprung trap. It’s one of the most fiendishly designed crime films ever made — infernally so.
