Friday Film Matinee
Special Pride Month Screening • Co-presented with ScreenBoston.com
What “That’s Entertainment” did for movie musicals, “The Celluloid Closet” does for Hollywood homosexuality, as this exuberant, eye-opening movie serves up a dazzling hundred-year history of the impact gay men and lesbians have had on the silver screen. Lily Tomlin narrates as Oscar-winning moviemaker Rob Epstein (THE TIMES OF HARVEY MILK and Common Threads: Stories from the Quilt) and Jeffrey Friedman assemble fabulous footage from 120 films showing the changing face of cinema sexuality, from cruel stereotypes to covert love to the activist triumphs of the 1990s. Tom Hanks, Susan Sarandon, Whoopi Goldberg, Tony Curtis, Harvey Fierstein and Gore Vidal are just a few of the many actors, writers and commentators who provide funny and insightful anecdotes.
1996 • Dir Jeffrey Friedman, Rob Epstein w/Gore Vidal, Lily Tomlin, Susan Sarandon, Tony Curtis, Whoopi Goldberg • 35mm • 102 min

The Friday Film Matinee is a new, ongoing program at The Brattle featuring special screenings of 35mm prints on Friday afternoons. We know that seeing a film on 35mm is worth skipping class or leaving work early for so come play hooky with us as we celebrate the magic of ‘reel film’ at The Brattle!
This program is funded in part by The Brattle’s 35mm Film Fund. Donations to this fund maintain our film projection equipment, train future projectionists, and ensure that The Brattle will be able to continue 35mm screenings well into the future. Learn more:
