If you’re not already familiar with the term, a kanikapila is a Hawaiian music jam – typically casual in nature, people gather to share their love of Hawaiian music, taking turns leading songs, hula dancers join in for songs they know.
The location is indoors and has chairs for us to use, as well as a projector for song sheets.
You don’t need to be a musician or hula dancer to come – everyone with an interest in Hawaiian music or cultures is more than welcome to just come.
What to bring to the kanikapila:
• Yourself – most importantly, bring yourself, your love for Hawaiian music, and some Aloha spirit. Everything else is optional.
• Instruments and music stands if you’re a musician
• A song to share – I plan to project songs and have a good collection of song sheets, but if you have a favorite, please bring a few copies to pass around.
• He Mele Aloha songbook if you have it. This is an excellent resource for kanikapila songs, including several hula songs. We'll also use the BUG Kanikapila Book in the group files.
• Food – If You Know You Know. We love our food. I’ll have paper plates, utensils, etc. to share.
Please RSVP if you’re coming by e-mail, or on the Facebook group. This will help us plan how many chairs to setup, etc.
