SMILE (Cologne, Siluh Records)
SMILE is a post-punk band with a frontwoman who prefers not to sing. She instead intones her poetic stories spiked with personal reflections. Taking notes from a UK-indebted post-punk sound, the band bet their cards on homogeneous straightforwardness, adhering to gloomy seriousness while making space for coolness. These ingredients are mixed with a sincere drive for experimentation, humor, dreamy buoyancy and a genre-blasting affinity for pop. Their stylistically confident debut Price of Progress from October 2023 showcases a level of versatility rarely found in today’s music, sounding as if it were cast from a single mold.
BLUSH ALWAYS (Leipzig, Embassy Of Music)
Different, yet familiar: For her second album as Blush Always, Leipzig musician and songwriter Katja Seiffert casts the strengths of her debut album in a new light. On “An Ode To ?”, critical self-reflection and empathetic storytelling increasingly replace chronic self-doubt, and her indie rock sound naturally transitions from raw urgency to catchy alternative pop. Katja Seiffert makes music with conviction. With the passionate self-empowerment songs of Blush Always’ fall 2023 debut “You Deserve Romance,” she playfully adapted the sound of 90s indie rock for the present day, relying not only on irresistible melodies and captivating intensity but also standing out frommany of her peers by sounding like an artist whose love for music is greater than the desire for fame.
PAULS JETS (Vienna, Staatsakt)
Pauls Jets are an indie band from Vienna known for their eclectic mix of genres and imaginative songwriting. With their 2019 debut album ‘Alle Songs bisher’, Pauls Jets made a plea against the small-mindedness of indie pop. It's not so much the content as the questions and contrasts that the band creates; these are pop songs that both serve and subvert pop. With their third album ‘Jazzfest’ from 2022 and their signing to the Berlin label Staatsakt, the Jets are taking a new direction working on and with chance, sound and montage. After an extensive break, a new album will follow soon.
SINEM (Munich, Fun In the Church)
The band Sinem, which consists of Sinem (vocals), Tagar (guitar) and Tom Wu (drums, loops and production), combines Turkish vocals with 80s new wave nostalgia. Arabesque rhythms meet minimalist synth basslines, electronic textures and raw guitar tones. Musically, boundaries are broken down and spaces are opened for maximum freedom of movement, both on and in front of the stage. Sinem, the singer, reinterprets classic Turkish pop songs and creates her own tunes. She relates to the experiences of the ‘Gurbetçiler’ generation and brings them to life in their songs.
HACHIKU (Melbourne, Marathon Artists)
Hachiku is the brainchild of German-Australian producer Anika Ostendorf, who writes and produces worldly indie rock with an alt-pop appeal. Through the release of their self-recorded and self-mixed EP "Hachiku" (2017) and critically acclaimed debut LP "I’ll Probably Be Asleep" (2020) and 2nd LP "The Joys Of Being Pure At Heart" (2025), Hachiku has steadily built a loyal global fan base hinged on catchy melodies, shimmering walls of sound, and their praised live performances.
