Amanda (Jennifer Ehle) brachte es als Tänzerin zu großem Ruhm, heute kommt die einst so erfolgreiche Frau aufgrund ihrer körperlichen Gebrechen allerdings kaum noch aus dem Haus. Um ihren Alltag unter den gegebenen Umständen besser zu bewältigen, wird ihr schließlich die ebenso religiöse wie aufopfernde Maud (Morfydd Clark) an die Seite gestellt. Die junge Krankenschwester zieht bei Amanda ein und fasziniert ihre Patientin sofort. Doch es steckt weit mehr in ihr als bloße Güte und Hilfsbereitschaft: Geplagt von ihrer dunklen Vergangenheit und heimgesucht von mysteriösen Visionen, ist Maud felsenfest davon überzeugt, Gott höchstselbst hätte sie zu Amanda geführt und deren Schicksal in ihre Hände gelegt. Amanda (Jennifer Ehle) achieved great fame as a dancer, but today, due to her physical ailments, the once successful woman hardly ever leaves the house. To help her cope with her daily life under the given circumstances, she is eventually assigned the equally religious and self-sacrificing Maud (Morfydd Clark). The young nurse moves in with Amanda and immediately fascinates her patient.
