Mathias Landæus is a Swedish jazz pianist and composer, well known for his adventurous attitude and excellent musicianship. He has released 24 albums since his record debut in 1996. His output ranges from jazz jazz to electronic and improv. As a composer, visionary leader and master collaborator, his work celebrates connection, imagination and freedom.
Johan Leijonhufvud is a renowned Swedish jazz guitarist living in Berlin, Germany. He was born in 1971 in the county of Gothenburg, Sweden, and grew up in Växjö, Sweden. He began to play piano at the age of nine and guitar at the age of eleven. He has played and recorded with some notable artists such as Benny Bailey, Till Brönner, Mark Murphy, Svante Thuresson, Anders Bergcrantz, Esbjörn Svensson, Nils Landgren, Wolfgang Haffner, Victoria Tolstoy, Claes Jansson, David Haynes, Kjell Öhman, Berndt Rosengren, and Max Schultz.
Guitarist Johan Leijonhufvud and pianist Mathias Landæus first encountered each other as little children in a potato field in the countryside of South Sweden.
They became summer playmates and later reconnected in their teens through their jazz studies. They have since followed each other through life, as friends and musical playmates, each carving out their own unique career in jazz. Every time they get together to play there is an obvious musical chemistry that can only come from this kind of personal history of closeness and mutual respect. At this point both musicians have released numerous albums, received awards and played with an impressive list of big names in jazz. Still, as they enter the stage together, they somehow remain the playful children they once were.
This summer we celebrate the 50 year anniversary of that chance meeting in the potato field!
