Join us for Sip N’ Science: Fungus Among Us on Friday, May 30th from 6:30-8:30 pm at River Bend Nature Center!
Fungal infections in humans are relatively rare — especially when compared to the vast number of diseases caused by bacteria and viruses. But why is that?
Sip N’ Science: Fungus Among Us explores a fascinating hypothesis: after the asteroid impact that wiped out the dinosaurs, Earth experienced a period of cooler temperatures. These conditions favored fungal growth. In response, animals that could regulate their body temperature — warm-blooded mammals — had a survival advantage. Their elevated body heat helped protect them from deadly fungal infections.
Fast forward to today: as global temperatures rise, fungi are slowly adapting to warmer conditions. This raises a troubling possibility — will more fungi become capable of infecting humans in the future?
Join us for a discussion that connects extinction events, evolutionary adaptation, infectious disease, and climate change with MSU’s Dr. James Masuoka.
This event is 21+, and tickets are $25 for non-members and $20 for River Bend members. Wine, beer, and hors d’oeuvres are included to make the evening even more enjoyable.
Don’t miss out on this fun and educational night of creativity, science, and great company!
