The world feels like it’s ending and everybody’s saying goodbye to Chuck. Wherever middle-school teacher Marty (Chiwetel Ejiofor) goes, he can’t get away from Charles Krantz (Tom Hiddleston). His face is showing up on ads, billboards, window signs, even TV commercials. Who is this guy? Pushed backwards in time, we learn about Chuck’s life — a special moment shared with strangers, the trials and traumas of his youth, the people whose connections shaped his life. And why that life matters.
The first non-horror movie from director Mike Flanagan (Oculus, Gerald’s Game, Doctor Sleep) and based on a non-horror novella by Stephen King, The Life of Chuck is a tender, deft heart-string-plucker, in the vein of other personality dramas that bring in fantastical elements to tell their tales — think The Time Traveler’s Wife, Big Fish or The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. TIFF called it “a Stand By Me for the multiple lives within each of us.” And we think you’ll find something you love in The Life of Chuck.
