The phrase “cult classic” gets thrown around a lot these days, frequently at films that aren’t even a decade old. A new movie might be “cult” — which some shameless writers use instead of “not very popular” — but nobody can know whether it will be a classic. Monty Python and the Holy Grail, though, is both. Its audience has always been small but rabid, and it has passed down the years from hand to hand like a sacred text. If you think middle-schoolers shouting “skibidi toilet” at each other is annoying, you’ll be devastated to learn how often middle-schoolers in the ‘90s quoted the Knights Who Say ‘Ni.’
What good fortune, then, that a British sketch-comedy group who got a little popularity chose to write, direct and star in one of the greatest comedy films of all time. And a little popularity it was; no studio would finance a farce made by TV comedians, set in the Middle Ages, lampooning the legend of King Arthur. Especially one that doesn’t have much a point. So they reached out to rock stars for financing. Eric Idle has said that the film’s entire budget was provided by eight investors: Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull, three record companies, a cricket team founded by Andrew Lloyd Webber’s writing partner, and one of the original stage producers of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Those middle-schoolers got something right.
FILM TALK: Guests are invited to stick around after the screening for a post-show Film Talk and audience Q&A with Christopher Novak, American Cinema and Global Media Cultures lecturer at the University of Tampa. Film Talks are included with movie admission.
