A Curator Conversation: Mary Burns

Join us for an engaging evening as guest curator Suzanne Rose sits down with artist Mary Burns to discuss her powerful work in the current exhibition, Women and Water: Woven Portraits from Around the World. The exhibition features 29 woven Jacquard portraits honoring women working globally to safeguard water resources.

The conversation will explore Burns’ relationship with water, from her upbringing to her life on the Manitowish River, and how it has informed her five-decade weaving practice. She will share insights into her transition to the digital Jacquard loom, the selection of women featured in the project, and the challenges and rewards of translating environmental narratives into textile form. Burns and Rose will also discuss the monochromatic aesthetic of the work, the role of collaboration, and how Women and Water serves as a platform for advocacy and connection across cultures.

The program is is made possible, in part, with funding from the Women's Fund of Door County, and the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts. The event is free and open to the public.
