Math & a Movie: Sneakers

Join PacSci for our first Math and a Movie with a screening of Sneakers, a fast-paced techno-thriller where cryptography, espionage, and high-stakes heists collide. When a former hacker turned security expert (Robert Redford) is blackmailed into stealing a mysterious device when he and his team soon uncover a dangerous truth. As the lines between right and wrong blur, they must decide who to trust and how far they’ll go to protect our digital world.

Before the screening, enjoy a brief introduction to the math behind the story. Speaker Nick Rauh will dive into the real-world math of public key cryptography. You’ll learn how the RSA cryptosystem secures your digital life and why it’s so hard to crack. What makes modern encryption tick? And what would it take to break it? This program includes audience Q&A with the guest speaker.

The featured film is rated PG-13. This event is recommended for guests ages 13 and up.

About the Speaker
Nick Rauh is Mathematician in Residence at the Seattle Universal Math Museum. His Ph.D. is in number theory, but his focus these days is on the mathematics of puzzles, games, arts and crafts, toys, and other recreations.
