Join us for a workshop introducing Crete Chae Clay an outdoor sculpting mix hosted by
artist Lee Bell of Black Lily Studio
Lee developed a portland based clay that is suitable for making garden, outdoor artwork
that does not need a kiln.
. We will provide a basic armature to create a dragonfly sculpture and all the materials
needed for this workshop. You may bring embellishments for your dragonfly such as
beads, glass or mosaic tiles that could be embedded into the crete chae clay to add even
more sparkle to your dragonfly. The class size caps for this workshop at 10 people, so
sign up early. If you enjoy this process in the workshop, there will be an opportunity to
purchase Lee's small booklet telling the story of Crete Chae Clay including the recipe and
examples of Lee's large outdoor sculptures featured throughout the south in exhibitions
and sculpture parks.
The Fabulous Arts Foundation in Partnership with the Johnson Singer Education Fund will
be hosting monthly workshops where we are welcoming members of the LGBTQIA+
community, allies, and family members to come in and create works of art with our master
instructors. All work made in the workshops will be installed at the Sarasota Art Museum
in July for an intergenerational art exhibition called "0-99 The Art of a Rainbow Life: Still
here, Still Becoming". We have themes for all age groups that join our workshops, but
know that your creativity is not bound to those themes. We hope they serve as inspiration
for ideation. We look forward to this initiative as a time to come together and tell our
stories through the power of art.

Artists Statement
My subject matter has remained rooted in themes of nature, feminine beauty
and animals. Sculpture's are created with the intent of bringing a figure to
life that is both whimsical and elegant simultaneously. A successful piece
exudes something of a life force in an apparent though ephemeral personality.
The paradox in the work that the up cycled material is commonly disposed of in
ways that effect the very creatures I am creating is important to me.
One artistic goal is for my work to speak, draw attention to the use of
recycled materials
(that are intentionally not obvious) :
That all works made from recycled material do not have to look like the
recycled parts they were crafted from in the final work.
I am saddened by what is happening to our wildlife and environment
and create my work in an intuitive manner of conversation
between up cycled / recycled materials mixed with compounded cement,
steel and a strong affinity: appreciation for all things in nature.
