Um viðburðinn:
Málstofan fjallar um gögn og þær greiningar sem liggja til grundvallar á mati á vistspori og framleiðni jarðarinnar auk greininga á “Earth Overshoot Day” með sérstakri áherslu á vistspor Íslands. Sérstaklega verður fjallað um hvernig vistpor Íslands þróaðist frá 1961-2024 og hvað það er sem veldur því að vistspor Íslands er eitt það stærsta í heiminum. Einnig verður fjallað um hvernig lönd, sveitarfélög og fyrirtæki geta nýtt sér vistsporsmælingar til að draga úr álagi á vistkerfi jarðarinnar.
Eftir þrjá fyrirlestra verður síðan pallborð þar sem áhersla er lögð á hvernig draga má úr vistspori Íslands og hvernig nýta má vistsporsmælingar til að draga úr umhverfisáhrifum.
Vistspor og mat á framleiðni jarðar (e: ecological footprint and biocapacity accounts) eru mælikvarðar sem notaðir eru til að meta umhverfislega sjálfbærni þar sem þeir sýna álag neyslu mannsins á umhverfi og auðlindir. Mælikvarðarnir eru t.d. notaðir til að sýna hvenær íbúar heims fara á „yfirdrátt“ miðað við framleiðni jarðarinnar með svokölluðum „Earth Overshoot Day“. Uncovering Iceland’s Ecological Footprint: Using the footprint to reveal and reduce environmental pressures

This open seminar will showcase the Ecological Footprint data from the National Ecological Footprint and Biocapacity Accounts, co-produced by researchers at York University in Toronto, Canada and the University of Iceland in Reykjavik, Iceland enabled by a grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.
Researchers from both institutions will explain the conceptual framework of this accounting system and present data on a timeline from 1961 to 2024. A special focus is given to the development of the Icelandic Ecological footprint reviewing how it has developed over time, how it compares to other nations and exploring the key reasons for the size of the Icelandic footprint. Applications of the footprint will be showcased illustrating how the footprint can be used for nations, municipalities and companies to reduce their impact on the earths ecosystems.
A panel discussion will follow the presentations where panelists will discuss the reasons for the size of the Icelandic ecological footprint and how to reduce it.
The ecological footprint and biocapacity accounts are commonly used sustainability metrics that illustrate „how much nature we use and how much nature we have“. The accounts are for example used to assess the Earth Overshood Day which marks the date when humanity's demand for ecological resources and services in a given year exceeds what Earth can regenerate in that year.
