QUINCY MUSEUM HOSTS FREE TALK EXPLORING POPE LEO XIV’S
SURPRISING LOCAL ROOTS

QUINCY, Illinois-–The Quincy Museum invites the public to attend a compelling free talk, “Pope Leo’s Quincy Connection,” on Tuesday, June 10, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at The Quincy Museum, located at 1601 Maine Street.
Veteran journalist and Muddy River News editor David Adam will share the fascinating story of Pope Leo XIV’s grandfather, who lived and worked in Quincy under the name John Riggitano. The talk is based upon Adam’s May 19 Muddy River News article about genealogical research linking Quincy to the Vatican. He will also share how a series of unexpected phone calls from around the world inspired him to write the story.
Recently uncovered genealogical records reveal that the Pope’s grandfather, born Salvatore Riggitano in Sicily, arrived in the U.S. in 1903. Shortly thereafter, he settled in Quincy, where his two sisters already lived. He taught Spanish and music and attended St. Francis Solanus College (now Quincy University). Riggitano’s time in Quincy is documented through various records, including newspaper advertisements and census data. This local connection adds a fascinating chapter to the life story of the first American-born pope.
“Reporting on Pope Leo XIV’s familial ties to Quincy has been an extraordinary journey,” said Adam. “It’s a testament to the rich, yet often unexpected, threads that weave through Quincy’s history.”
Anne Forbes, Development Director at The Quincy Museum, emphasized the significance of the event: “This talk highlights how local history can resonate on a global scale. It offers our community a rare chance to connect with a broader story that extends all the way to the Vatican. It’s also an exciting opportunity for the museum to engage adults and teens, as many of our programs are tailored to younger children.”
