The thing about getting older is you tend to focus on that which transcends your typical list of worthy pursuits in favor of those subjects not quite within your reach. As I walk through my waning years, my pathway littered with the remnants of promises broken, frivolous pursuits, deals not kept, secrets betrayed, fallen friends, and the dissipating energy that comes with advanced age, the multitude of questions creeping in and out of my consciousness are these: does any of it at all matter? We may sing- is anybody listening? We may write a song- does anybody care? Paint a picture, take a photo- who or what is the subject? For whose eyes to see? What does it all matter? Really? What is the purpose?
I love my life, but like many I'm sure, I struggle with the ultimate reason for being alive. I feel love, but long for connection with its Devine Source. Sometimes- while performing- when I'm "in the zone"- to the point where I've become part of the song, I feel it most. Like that performance where it seems you really get it and those in the audience get it too. When you can recognize something special is taking place. Where you know that although it may be coming from your voice, your instrument, it's actually totally out of your control. Something else has taken over. Someone else is in charge.
This September will mark year 16 for me and my involvement in Open Mic Thursday at The Mediator Stage. Of all the acts that I have had the pleasure and privilege to introduce and listen to, I'm sure most of them can relate on some level to these feelings I've described. Especially the older performers, but not exclusively.
Help me out here- please leave your thoughts and comments. Is there a Higher Power that is somehow more easily revealed through the act of making music especially when performing it for others? Is this valid evidence for the existence of God?
