Are you ready to explore under the dark skies of Central Oregon? Join us and local astrophotographer Jeremy Likness for an educational adventure! Your trip includes transportation from Newport or Corvallis, lodging (Prineville Best Western), informal workshop time with Jeremy Likness to learn about camera and phone settings that best work with dark sky photography, a presentation at Prineville Reservoir co presented by Jeremy and a park ranger, and hands on time in the park after dark to practice taking photos. We will also make a quick pit stop on the way over at Lost Lake to see where the lake disappears into a lava tube and learn about the geology of the area and have 2 hours in Sisters for lunch and exploring. Expected departure time from Newport is 9:30 am, Saturday. Expected pick up time in Corvallis is 10:30am. Free parking for vehicles overnight at Newport Recreation Center and Corvallis Community Center. Expected return time is 4 pm, Sunday.
Prineville Reservoir State Park has been designated a dark skies park, so as long as the weather cooperates, we should have some great viewing. We will stay out as late as the group desires (we will have two vans, so those wishing to turn in early can leave early) and come back to Newport after a late breakfast the next day. Meals are not included in the trip fee.
Expected itinerary:
Saturday, Aug 23rd
Pick up at Newport Recreation Center - 9:30am
Pick up at Corvallis Community Center - 10:30am
Stop at Lost Lake to see lava tube and discuss local geology (30 min) - 12:45pm
Stop at Sisters for lunch and exploring (2 hours) - 1:45pm
Arrive at Prineville Best Western - 3:45
Time on your own/dinner - 4:45-7
Meet with Jeremy - 7pm
Drive to Prineville State Park - 7:35pm
Workshop on camera/phone settings with Jeremy - 8pm
Time on own for twilight/sunset photos - 9pm-10pm
Presentation with Jeremy and ranger - 10pm
Our group goes on own for night photography session - 10:45pm
Head back to hotel when we are ready
Sunday, Aug 24th
Sleep in! Continental breakfast available at the hotel. Depart by 10:30am
Stop at Covered Bridge in Cascadia for a quick break and photos - 12:30pm
Stop at food truck park in Lebanon for lunch - 1:20pm
Drop off at Corvallis Community Center - 2:50pm
Arrive at Newport Recreation Center - 3:50pm
Base rate for double occupancy is $275. Single occupancy will add a $60 fee. Triple and quadruple occupancy for double queen rooms will have a $23 (triple) and $35 (quadruple) discount.
If the weather is not cooperating or we do not reach the minimum number of participants, you will receive a full refund.
Cancellation policy: Cancelations made 16 days (Aug 7th) or more before the trip will receive a full refund. Cancelations between 16 and 5 days prior will receive a 50% refund (Aug 7-18). Cancelations made 3 or less days before the trip will not receive a refund.
