A recital of art songs, mélodies, and solo piano by composers Benjamin Britten, Claude Debussy and Francis Poulenc, presented by mezzo-soprano Carole Portelance and pianist Jean Desmarais at Rideau Park United Church in Ottawa, October 5, 2025, at 4:00 pm. The overall theme of the recital is based on interpretations and “reflections” by these composers on Day and Night: how we move through these circadian rhythms, contemplating our place in time, our loves, friendships, our environment, our sufferings and our bonds with humanity.
Both Carole Portelance and Jean Desmarais are well known in the Ottawa-Gatineau area. Furthermore, Jean Desmarais is an internationally-acclaimed pianist, collaborative artist, teacher and vocal coach. Both are passionate about art song and its interpretation.
Our programme includes:
• Tel jour, telle nuit, by Francis Poulenc
• Selections from Winter Words and On this Island, by Benjamin Britten
• Beau Soir, for voice, and Clair de Lune, for solo piano, both by Claude Debussy.
Admission to this recital is by free-will offering.
