Η έκθεση «ΣΙΜΩΝΗΣ, ΣΙΜΩΝΗΣ», που διοργανώνει το Πολιτιστικό Ίδρυμα Λευτέρη Οικονόμου, αννοίει τις πόρτες της στις 29 Νοεμβρίου 2025 στις 19:00, στο ΓΚΑΡΑΖ.
Η έκθεση φέρνει μαζί το αρχείο του χαράκτη/σχεδιαστή Κώστα Σιμώνη (γ. 1901) τζιαι του γραφίστα Γιώργου Σιμώνη (γ. 1934), πατέρα τζιαι γιου, που υπήρξαν σημαντικοί σχεδιαστές της Κύπρου κατά τον 20ό αιώνα. Ακόμα τζιαι αν δεν ξέρουν πολλοί τα ονόματά τους, ξέρουν μάλλον δουλειές τους: που διαφημίσεις για ντόπια καταστήματα, ετικέτες ποτών, όπως για κυπριακά κρασιά, μπράντυ, ροδόσταγμα, εταιρικές ταυτότητες για ξενοδοχεία, συσκευασίες προϊόντων κ.ά.
Η έκθεση παρουσιάζει δουλειές των δύο σχεδιαστών που τις δεκαετίες του ’30 μέχρι του ’90: προσχέδια που εν εκυκλοφόρησαν ποττέ, ολοκληρωμένα σχέδια, μακέττες προϊόντων, εργαλεία, τζιαι φωτογραφίες που το αρχείο τους.
Παρατηρώντας το ανανεωμένο ενδιαφέρον που παρουσιάζει ο κόσμος για την οπτική γλώσσα της γενιάς των Σιμώνηδων, προσπαθούμε να καταλάβουμε τι συμβολίζουν τούτες οι δουλειές στη συλλογική μας μνήμη. Πέραν που την παιχνιδιάρικη αισθητική, τις έντονες συνθέσεις τζιαι τη γοητεία των χειροποίητων τεχνικών τους, φαίνεται να υπάρχει μια νοσταλγία που ελκύει τον κόσμο κοντά στην συγκεκριμένη δουλειά. Μέσα που το πρίσμα των σπουδών της νοσταλγίας, προσεγγίζουμε τα σχέδιά τους ως σημαινόμενα για τα φαντασιακά παρελθόντα της Κύπρου όπως τζιαι τα πιθανά μέλλοντα που εν ήρταν. Την ίδια στιγμή, καταλαβαίνουμε τα έργα τους ως οπτικά τεκμήρια που κουβαλούν θραύσματα των κοινωνικών τζιαι ιστορικών πραγματικοτήτων της Κύπρου του 20ού αιώνα.
Σύντομα βιογραφικά:
Ο Κώστας Σιμώνης γεννήθηκε στην Ελλάδα το 1901. Εσπούδασε ζωγραφική σε ακαδημία στην Κέρκυρα τζιαι ειδικεύτηκε στη χαρακτική. Εργάστηκε στην Κέρκυρα στον εκδοτικό οίκο Ασπιώτη-ΕΛΚΑ μέχρι το 1926 τζιαι μετά εμετακόμισε στη Στερεά Ελλάδα μέχρι το 1931, όταν εγκαταστάθηκε στη Λεμεσό για να ενταχθεί στο Λιθογραφείο του Δημήτρη Κουβά, όπου έμεινε για σχεδόν τριάντα χρόνια.
Ο Γιώργος Σιμώνης, γεννημένος στη Λεμεσό το 1934, επήε στην Αθήνα για να σπουδάσει καλές τέχνες, αλλά τελικά επέλεξε να εκπαιδευτεί στη σύγχρονη λιθογραφία σε ένα λιθογραφείο. Έναν χρόνο μετά, επέστρεψε στην Κύπρο τζιαι εδούλεψε για είκοσι δύο χρόνια στη Litho Box ως γραφίστας, ενώ παράλληλα έκαμνε freelance δουλειές τζιαι εσυνεργαζόταν με την Pearl and Dean, μια βρετανική εταιρεία κινηματογραφικής διαφήμισης. Tο 1976 άνοιξε επίσημα το γραφείο γραφιστικής τζιαι διαφήμισης «Γιώργος Σιμώνης» στη Λευκωσία, το οποίο διατήρησε μέχρι και την αφυπηρέτησή του. Απεβίωσε το 2021.

SIMONIS, SIMONIS: Nostalgia for signifiers of what never was
The exhibition “SIMONIS, SIMONIS” organised by “The Lefteris Economou Foundation” opens its doors on the 29th of November 2025 at 19:00, at Garage Art Space.
The exhibition brings together the archive of the engraver/designer Kostas Simonis (b. 1901) and the graphic designer Giorgos Simonis (b. 1934), a father and a son, who were both influential designers of Cyprus in the 20th century. Even though not a lot of people know their names, most will have already seen their designs, ranging from iconic advertisements for local shops, drink labels for Cypriot wines, brandy, rosewater and more, corporate identities for hotels, product packaging etc.
This exhibition showcases works of both designers from the 1930s to the 1990s: drafts that never saw the light before, finished designs, product maquettes, tools, and photographs from their archive.
Noticing a newfound fascination with the visual language of Simonis’ generation, we try to understand what these works symbolise in our collective memory. Beyond their playful aesthetics, bold compositions, and the charm of their handmade techniques, there seems to be a nostalgic feeling that draws people to them. Through the prism of nostalgia studies, we approach these designs as signifiers of imagined pasts of Cyprus and of the possible futures that never arrived. At the same time, we read them as visual documents that carry traces of the social and historical realities of Cyprus in the 20th century.
Brief bios:
Kostas Simonis was born in Greece in 1901. He studied painting at an academy in Corfu and specialised in engraving. He worked in Corfu at the Aspioti-ALKA printing house until 1926 and later moved to Central Greece. In 1931, he moved to Limassol to join the Demetris Kouvas Lithography Studio, where he remained for almost thirty years.
Giorgos Simonis was born in Limassol in 1934. He went to Athens to study fine arts, but chose instead to train in contemporary lithography at a studio. A year later, he returned to Cyprus and worked as a graphic designer for Litho Box for twenty-two years, while also freelancing and collaborating part-time with Pearl and Dean, a British cinema advertising company. In 1976, he officially opened the "Giorgos Simonis" graphic design and advertising office in Nicosia, which he maintained until his retirement. He passed away in 2021.
