Southern Nights is an intimate Americana songwriter series presented by BlackAmericana Fest, celebrating storytelling, community, and the rich musical roots of New Orleans and the Mississippi River Delta. Curated by Dusky Waters, each evening showcases performances by talented women songwriters, culminating in a collaborative “superset” where all artists unite to honor the songs of their musical heroines. This series offers a heartfelt tribute to the legacy of Black women in Americana music, fostering a space for connection, cultural reflection, and artistic celebration.
Joy Clark is a New Orleans-based singer-songwriter and guitarist whose soulful compositions blend Americana, folk, blues, and the rich musical traditions of Southeast Louisiana. Clark has toured internationally with Grammy winner Cyril Neville and collaborated with artists like Allison Russell, Brandi Carlile, and the Indigo Girls. Her debut album, Tell It to the Wind, released on Righteous Babe Records, is a testament to her identity as a proud, queer Black woman, weaving themes of love, freedom, and self-acceptance into her music.
Sabine McCalla is a New Orleans-based singer-songwriter whose music weaves together the rich threads of folk, blues, gospel, and Haitian spiritual traditions. Born into a Haitian-American family, she is the younger sister of acclaimed musician Leyla McCalla.Sabine's evocative voice and minimalist arrangements—often featuring sparse instrumentation and acappella performances—highlight her storytelling prowess and deep emotional resonance. Her 2018 debut EP, Folk, showcases this stripped-down style, with tracks like "I Went to the Levee" and "Save My Soul" drawing critical acclaim.
