Sattriya by Prateesha Suresh
A Perspective – Drishtikon is a series of lecture-demonstrations to promote the classical dance forms of India. It is held by the Museum Society of Mumbai with support from the NCPA and K. V. Mariwala Philanthropy Initiative on the 60th anniversary of the society. This month, Sattriya exponent Prateesha Suresh will give an insightful lecture-demonstration on the dance form.
Prateesha Suresh is a distinguished Indian classical dancer and choreographer who began her artistic journey at the age of five. Trained in Sattriya under Raseshwar Saikia Barbayan and later in Bharatanatyam at Kalakshetra in Chennai, her time under the influence of Rukmini Devi Arundale profoundly shaped her artistic sensibilities. On returning to Assam, she deepened her practice of Sattriya under the guidance of Ghana Kanta Borah Barbayan and Haricharan Bhuyan Barbayan. Through her non-profit, the Pratishruti Foundation, she promotes Sattriya via performances, seminars, festivals and educational outreach in India and abroad. Actively engaged in academic and independent research, she is dedicated to furthering the philosophy and legacy of Shrimanta Shankardev, the 16th-century Assamese poet, saint and scholar, on national and global platforms.
