The Al Sears Music Fest presents WIU Jazz Combo I on Sunday, September 21, from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. at the Western Illinois Museum as part of its Spotlight on Local, which showcases exceptional musical talent from the region. Under the direction of Dr. George Turner, the ensemble performs student-arranged repertoire drawn from both the jazz and American Songbook traditions. This dynamic group offers a fresh take on timeless classics while highlighting the creativity and skill of its members. This year’s lineup includes Zack Browning on trumpet, Josh Buczko on alto saxophone, Kevin Kurtz on baritone saxophone, Jacob Behm on guitar, Brett Daugherty on bass, Darren Woods on drums, and vocalist Ana Oliveira.
Daytime performances begin at noon, with bar service and Sandra’s Authentic Mexican Food Truck available throughout the day. Visitors can enjoy additional live music as part of this day-long celebration of Al Sears, leading into Anthony’s headline performance in the evening.
The Al Sears Music Fest honors Macomb native Al Sears (1910–1990), a pioneering saxophonist, songwriter, and entrepreneur who performed with jazz legends like Duke Ellington and Lionel Hampton, and played a key role in shaping the sound of early rock and roll as a producer and executive with ABC Paramount.
Throughout the weekend, the Western Illinois Museum will feature photographs, recordings, and artifacts highlighting Sears’s remarkable career.
