The Al Sears Music Fest wraps up Sunday, September 21, with an afternoon of music and conversation at the Western Illinois Museum. Headlining is Yoseph Henry, acclaimed jazz, R&B, and gospel vocalist—and proud WIU alum—who will perform and join a discussion on Al Sears’s lasting legacy.
The Community Conversation will explore Sears’s influence on music, integration, and the music industry, featuring Henry alongside jazz musicians Whitney Ashe, John Cooper, and festival co-founder Bill Maakestad.
Come early—bar service and Sandra’s Authentic Mexican Food Truck open at noon and will serve throughout the celebration.
Held in the Museum’s welcoming Our Front Porch space, the event offers the chance to learn about Macomb native Al Sears (1910–1990)—a pioneering saxophonist, songwriter, and entrepreneur who performed with Duke Ellington and Lionel Hampton, helped shape rock-and-roll, and later worked as a producer and record executive.
Throughout the weekend, the Museum will feature photographs, recordings, and artifacts highlighting Sears’s remarkable career.
Bring your family, invite your friends, and celebrate Al Sears and Macomb’s unique place in American music history.
