Explore the Art of CyanotypeCyanotype is a 19th-century alternative photography process that produces rich cyan-blue prints when exposed to UV light. Originally used to document scientific drawings and plant specimens, it’s now adapted to many surfaces and designs. We can use it to preserve the gorgeous botanicals that bloom in summer by creating permanent imprints of ferns, flowers, and leaves collected along the New England coastline.
In this process, a light-sensitive solution made from two components—Potassium ferricyanide (a red iron salt) and Ferric ammonium citrate (a light-sensitive iron salt)—is painted onto fabric or paper. Botanicals are then arranged on the surface, and the piece is exposed to the sun, creating beautiful botanical motifs as the solution turns deep blue.
In this workshop, students will learn to mix the cyanotype solution, apply it to paper, and create prints using a variety of foraged plants. After exposure, prints will be rinsed and hung to dry. We will then use the same technique to create a print on a canvas tote bag. Everyone will leave with a finished fabric bag and a paper print inspired by the natural world.
