Beekeeper for a Day: Hands-On Hive Experience in Leander, TX

What You’ll Do:

• Suit up and open a live Langstroth honeybee hive
• Learn to identify workers, drones, brood, honey stores—and maybe the queen
• Try your hand at smoking the bees and inspecting frames
• Taste raw honey straight from the comb as well as several stored varietals.
• Get a crash course in backyard beekeeping: gear, time, cost, and how to get started

• Total beginners curious about beekeeping
• Gardeners, homesteaders, and nature lovers
• Parents with older kids (12+ welcome with ticket)

We keep group sizes small to keep it personal (and safe). You’ll leave sticky-fingered, wide-eyed, and maybe a little obsessed with bees.

Protective gear will be provided to borrow but you are welcome to bring your own suit!

Info: We’ll start with a warm welcome, get to know each other a bit, and walk through what the day will look like. Then we’ll help you suit up with the proper gear, show you how it works, and make sure you feel safe and ready before we head out. No rush, no pressure—just a relaxed start to a great experience.

Info: Once everyone’s geared up and feeling confident, we’ll take a calm, guided look inside a live beehive. You’ll stay fully suited and protected the whole time, and we move at a comfortable pace. You’ll get to see the bees up close, learn what’s happening inside the hive, and try to find the ever elusive queen.

Info: We’ll take a break to enjoy some of my homemade BBQ—yes, it’s as good as it sounds. While we eat, we’ll chat about all things bees: what they’re doing in the hive, how they support our world, and ways you can get involved. Laid-back, flavorful, and full of buzz-worthy conversation.

Info: I’ll walk you through the basics—from choosing your gear to setting up your first hive and making it through that all-important first season. I’m a Certified Advanced Beekeeper in the Texas Master Beekeeper Program, and I’ll share practical tips to help you start strong and avoid common rookie mistakes. Tons of real-world guidance to get you buzzing.

Info: We’ll wrap up the day on a sweet note with a guided honey tasting. You’ll sample a variety of local and seasonal honeys, practice picking out subtle flavor notes, and we'll see just how much a bee’s backyard can change the taste.
