Eric Smith Georgetown (1978-1982)
When the most valuable player for the 1981-82 season was announced, it wasn't the future Hall of Famer in Patrick Ewing or even a future NBA All-Star in Eric Floyd. Instead, the honor was awarded to Eric Smith, a 6-5 forward who epitomized the team concept that earned Georgetown national recognition in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
A three-sport star at Potomac's Churchill HS, Smith became the first Washington player since 1973 to be the first team All-Met in football and basketball, having won Maryland state championships in both football and basketball. Smith passed on college football to join the Hoyas and played sparingly in his first season, but coach John Thompson was not worried. At the start of his career, Thompson remarked that "Eric is the swingman we were looking for...I have never seen Eric play badly in a big game."
Smith proved to be a big game performer throughout his four years.
Bernard “Ducky” Vaughn, Cornell University( 1975-1977), was a name that resonated with the energy and flair of mid-century basketball culture. Cornell University averages 16 ppg and 2 x Ivy League. Known for his quick movements on the court and his ability to adapt to dynamic gameplay, Vaughn earned a reputation not only as a skilled player but also as a team motivator. Standing at just over six feet, Vaughn was neither the flashiest nor the most imposing player, but his agile style and sharp instincts placed him among the ranks of those who made their teammates shine.
