HOW WOMEN CHANGED THE LOCAL WORLD OF GIVING
Today we are awash with organizations designed to bring aid to families, disabled people, those
whose lives have been disrupted, those who despair and those who need end-of-life care. What we take for granted today was not the norm in the 19th century in Ithaca. Entities like McGraw House and the United Way, among many others, were created by
or with the aid of women to help address pressing needs.
Carol Kammen will explore the roles of several interesting women who stepped beyond social, religious and legal constraints to begin the creation of care in our community. What impelled
women to act beyond their expected roles? How did women go beyond female norms to expand
the world of philanthropy, thereby creating the world we know today? Join us in meeting these pioneering women!
Speaker: Carol Kammen, Author and Instructor, and Tompkins County Historian for 23 years before retiring.
Date/Time: Wed., October 22, 2025, 3:00 - 4:00 PM
Location: Kendal Auditorium, 2230 N. Triphammer Rd., Ithaca
DIRECTIONS TO THE KENDAL AT ITHACA AUDITORIUM:
Enter the Kendal campus via Savage Farm Drive at 2230 North Triphammer Road. At the end of this
short road, turn LEFT onto the “Ring Road” and continue until you see a sign on the right that includes
“Visitor South Parking.” Turn right into the Visitors Parking Lot. If this lot is full, it should be acceptable
to parallel park on the grass along the side of the Ring Road, as long as you are careful not to block the
crosswalk or other paths. Enter Kendal’s main building under the portico. Continue through the hallway at the LEFT of the Reception Desk and walk past the coatroom and the restrooms on the LEFT. The Auditorium entrance is just beyond.
