Military conflicts have often wide-ranging economic impacts. Motivated by the current conflicts, particularly Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine, we wish to discuss what we know (and do not know) about the economic aspects of wars and what our roles are, as scholars, media, and policymakers. We will delve into historical patterns, global politics, and economic analysis and briefly present a brand-new book, Routledge Handbook on the Economic History of War (edited by Jari Eloranta, Jeremy Land, Elina Kuorelahti, and Price Fishback, out in May 2025). We will feature shorter presentations, a panel discussion, as well as Q&A with the audience. The event is organized jointly by the University of Helsinki and Routledge. It is part of a new initiative by the Faculty of Social Sciences to feature discussions on
societal security.
