Beginner-friendly all-levels lindy and balboa workshop taught by Barbora Andryskova and Ben Tsai. This year's format is designed around three compact teaching sessions with generous time in between for practice. Be sure to arrive early to warm up before your first session as each session starts directly with the topic's instruction. The level of the instruction assumes participants have some experience dancing Lindy Hop socially, prior exposure to Balboa instruction (tasters or beginner courses), and is suitable for anyone that isn't yet fully confident dancing socially at international balboa festivals (e.g. Scandinavian Shuffle.)

Theme of August workshop continues the theme Lindy Hop and Balboa duality. Nearly all topics covered will have equivalents in both styles.
Instruction Session 1 - Rotation Dynamics of Lollies, Toss-Outs, and Turns
In able to turn comfortably and cleanly, we first review body mechanics: rotating in the hip socket joint, twisting upper body, and paddle turns. No more knee pain! Then we apply these techniques to multiple variations of lollies, toss-outs, and turns. Other themes include: conservation of angular momentum, transfer between rotational kinetic and rotational potential energy, and parallel/anti-parallel turn-axes.
Instruction Session 2 - Slow Balboa with Gait Variation
Dancing isn't about the steps you take but how you take them. First we dissect our stepping strides into several sub-components: preparation, weight change, and collection. Next we apply this technique to the slow balboa basic pattern. Finally, we rearrange the basic elements to generate stylistically accurate variations. While Slow Balboa is typically danced with Balboa frame to slow music, it can also be done with Lindy Hop steps in closed connection.
Instruction Session 3 - Musicality with Riffs and Phrase (Partner Required)
A 3-minute 200bpm balboa song and a 4-minute 150bpm lindy hop song both have 600 beats, enough for 75 8-count basics! How can one keep their partner entertained for so long? By identifying the song's riffs and phrases, a small number of variations can be used to generate a large variety of patterns, making every step simultaneously fresh and familiar. Lastly, we answer the question what does Acoustic Dixie Six mean when they say they will play a 'blues'? Because musicality develops over the course of an entire song, there will no partner rotations in this session in order to replicate the condition similar to social dancing. This session requires your own fixed partner.
