Educators:
Pekka Saarikorpi:
A Finnish body musician and percussionist – performing artist and educator.
Pekka has worked with many music, dance and theater companies and organizations all over Finland. At the moment, he is one of the most wanted educator and teacher trainer in Finland in the field of rhythmic and holistic music education. Besides workshops, he gives lectures regularly in the University of the Arts (Sibelius Academy), Metropolia University of the Applied Sciences (Music department) and Karelia University of the Applied Sciences (Rhythmic music department). He has also given workshops for students with special needs.
WHAT IS PEKKA SAARIKORPI RHYTHM & MOVEMENT:
Pekka Saarikorpi´s Rytmi & Liike - Rhythm & Movement is essentially a practical concept which emphasizes music and art as experience. As practical arts, music, dance and teaching need to be done. Therefore, Saarikorpi emphasizes the process of group learning, the power of group experience and every participants’ individual bodily action and bodily knowing – the holistic and kinesthetic learning processes. In Saarikorpi’s workshops students are exploring the relation of rhythm and movement, and music making overall, through their bodies.
Maria Rutanen:
a Berlin-based dance artist, teacher and choreographer.
Her choreographic and movement practice is intertwined between various techniques such as somatic body-based practices, release technique, instant composition and contact improvisation. She holds MA in Choreography at Inter-University for dance HZT Berlin. In her teaching, she is interested in the body's kinesthetic ability to reach and fall, the effect of touch on movement, and equal encounters of different bodies and abilities through movement. She has shared her teaching internationally, e.g. in India, West Africa and Iran.
In this movement exploration class, we work on the movement qualities of the body, up to spatial thinking of movement. We begin by attuning our bodies from within, reaching into space, and yielding to the weight of gravity. The class includes physical orientations to self, others, and space, using movement improvisation, different scores and experiential anatomy as tools. The essence of the class is to soften into the movement, and move with ease and lightness.
