Maailmantalous valtapolitiikan välineenä – mitä seuraa taloudellisten suhteiden aseellistamisesta?

Maailmantalouden verkostoja, rakenteita ja keskuksia hallitsevat valtiot ovat viime vuosikymmeninä näkyvästi käyttäneet asemaansa poliittisiin tarkoitusperiinsä. Yhdysvallat on muun muassa hyödyntänyt dollarin globaalia roolia ja kansainvälisiä maksujärjestelmiä vastustajiensa taloudelliseen vahingoittamiseen. Kiina on puolestaan käyttänyt hyväkseen hallitsevaa asemaansa harvinaisten maametallien tuotannossa, samalla kun maan ulkomaiset investoinnit ovat lisänneet muiden riippuvuutta siitä.

Taloudellisten keskinäisriippuvuuksien poliittisen hyväksikäytön ja Trumpin hallinnon aiempaa avoimemman painostuspolitiikan vuoksi valtiot arvioivat yhä tarkemmin riippuvaisuuksiaan toistensa hallitsemista ylikansallisista verkostoista ja rakenteista. Miltä näiden verkostojen ja rakenteiden, sekä niiden hallinnan ja laajemmin globaalin yhteistyön, tulevaisuus näyttäytyy riippuvuussuhteiden ”aseellistamisen” sekä Yhdysvaltojen ajaman taloudellisen nationalismin valossa?

Poliittisen talouden tutkimuksen seuran, Poliittinen talous -lehden sekä Suomen Akatemian rahoittaman ”How to overcome tendencies toward trade wars?” -tutkimushankkeen 13.8. järjestämä tilaisuus pureutuu näihin kysymyksiin. Tilaisuudessa aihepiiristä alustaa globaalin poliittisen talouden johtaviin kansainvälisiin asiantuntijoihin lukeutuva, palkitun Underground Empire -teoksen kirjoittaja, professori Abraham Newman (Georgetownin yliopisto). Hänen puheenvuoroaan seuraa paneelikeskustelu, jossa Newmanin kanssa keskustelevat Helsingin yliopiston maailmanpolitiikan professori Heikki Patomäki ja Ulkopoliittisen instituutin tutkimusprofessori Mikael Mattlin. Paneelin juontaa väitöskirjatutkija Niina Kari (Helsingin yliopisto).

Suomen Akatemian rahoittama ”How to overcome tendencies toward trade wars?” -tutkimushanke (2021–2025) pyrkii mahdollistamaan geotaloudellisten konfliktien kestävän ratkaisemisen globaalin hallinnan keinoin. Hanke tarkastelee erityisesti uuden maailmanlaajuisen selvitysunionin perustamisen edellytyksiä.

Public event: The World Economy as an Instrument of Power – Weaponized Interdependence and its Consequences

In recent decades, the states controlling the networks, structures, and centers of the world economy have increasingly visibly employed their position for political purposes. The United States, for example, has harnessed the global role of the dollar and the country’s influence over international payment systems to cause material harm to its political adversaries. China, in turn, has capitalized on its dominance in the production of rare earth minerals, and its foreign investments have increased others’ dependency on the country.

The evident political uses of economic linkages and the second Trump administration’s overt strong-arm tactics have prompted states to more carefully assess their dependencies on networks and structures controlled by other actors. How does the future of these networks and structures, their control and governance, and global cooperation more broadly appear in light of the weaponization of interdependencies and the peculiar form of economic nationalism furthered by the United States?

You are cordially welcome to a public event on these themes organized by the Finnish Society for Political Economy Research, the Finnish Review of Political Economy, and the Research Council of Finland project “How to overcome tendencies toward trade wars?”. Professor Abraham Newman (Georgetown University), a leading scholar of global political economy and the co-author of the award-winning Underground Empire, will deliver a keynote lecture on the topic. After the address, Professor Newman will take part in a panel discussion with Professor of World Politics Heikki Patomäki (University of Helsinki) and Research Professor Mikael Mattlin (Finnish Institute for International Affairs). Doctoral Researcher Niina Kari (University of Helsinki) will serve as moderator.

The purpose of the Finnish Society for Political Economy Research is to promote research and education in political economy on a national level. The Society publishes the academic journal Poliittinen talous (The Finnish Review of Political Economy). The journal ( https://journal.fi/poliittinentalous) also welcomes manuscripts that analyze geoeconomic phenomena.

The Research Council of Finland project “How to overcome tendencies toward trade wars?” (2021–2025) addresses geoeconomic tensions by developing new means of global governance. Its main focus is on the feasibility and viability of a worldwide clearing union.
