RACE-approved for 1 hour of CE credit for veterinarians and veterinary technicians!
Plus a Q&A after the lecture!
This course provides an in-depth look at anesthesia maintenance for goats and equids undergoing surgical intervention for urethral obstructions and colic – conditions that frequently result in emergency situations. These patients often present in a severely compromised state, requiring rapid stabilization and careful anesthetic planning. Significant abnormalities on bloodwork and physical exam add layers of complexity to anesthetic management. Throughout the course, we will review the pathophysiology behind these conditions, common clinical presentations, and discuss evidence-based strategies for safely inducing and maintaining anesthesia in these high-risk patients. Emphasis will be placed on patient monitoring, fluid therapy, drug selection, and intraoperative decision-making to optimize outcomes and reduce perioperative complications.
SPEAKER: Arantxa Lasa, LVMT
Arantxa attended Tulsa Community College, graduating in 2016 and becoming credentialed shortly thereafter. Arantxa worked in general practice throughout tech school and made the switch to academia upon graduation. In her almost 10 years in academia, she has worked in both food animal medicine and surgery and anesthesia. Arantxa aspires to incorporate fear-free restraint and low-stress handling, specifically with large animal patients, as it can sometimes be lacking. Additionally, she is very interested in anesthesia for critically ill patients and locoregional anesthesia for large animal standing procedures. In her free time, she likes to volunteer with high-volume spay/neuter organizations, which allows her to mix her two passions, travel and veterinary medicine, helping to provide veterinary care in communities with little to none available. To date, Arantxa has helped thousands of animals in Hawaii, Belize, the Marshall Islands, Cambodia, and St. Croix and will be traveling to Argentina in 2025.
