Our oceans are facing an unprecedented challenge. From 2019-2023 there was Unusual Mortality Event (UME) affecting gray whales along our coasts, during which time we lost approximately 45% of the Eastern Pacific population. Unfortunately. this year has seen a return to high mortality, especially in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. 18 gray whales and one minke whale have tragically died in the Bay Area, with vessel strikes suspected or probable in four gray whale cases. This crisis extends south, as Pacific Mexico has recorded a troubling 91 dead whales in 2025 as of mid-May, surpassing their record during the UME of 2020.
The Noyo Center for Marine Science is part of the team on the front lines of this crisis. Our dedicated stranding response team partners with Cal Academy of Sciences (CAS), the Marine Mammal Center, and Cal Poly Humboldt to monitor and respond to marine mammal strandings. Years of cumulative, collaborative data collection and response efforts underscore the severity of this non-localized, unusual event.
A Rare Glimpse & Expert Insights
In April, an adolescent minke whale's death in the Bay provided a rare opportunity to gather vital information on this less-common species in our region. CAS performed the necropsy and collected the skull, and the Noyo Center processed its skull for the collection. Now it's ready for its first public showing alongside our beaked whale being prepared for articulation this summer!
Join us for this special event featuring Moe Flannery, Ornithology and Mammalogy Collections Manager at CAS and leader of their marine mammal stranding response program. Moe will share insights into what they’ve seen this spring and their ongoing field work along the California coastline. You'll also hear compelling stories and perspectives on large whale strandings from Noyo Center's own Sheila Semans, Sarah Grimes, and Sara Sundberg.
