What do the South Downs mean to you? Come and explore this extraordinary landscape through art, stories and hands‑on activities at our Downland Art Trail Creative Open Day.
Spend the day with our partnership of community artists, heritage experts, rangers and volunteers, discovering installations inspired by the chalk grasslands, wildlife and ancient history of Butts Brow.
What’s on:
🎨 10.30am – Morning artist workshops
• Join artist Loupe Cooper in Butts Lane Meadow (Little Sheepdown) and help to decorate a bespoke moth cape – we are aiming to writing the names of all 2,500 UK moths onto the fabric wings! Loupe will also be setting up a discovery trail – an opportunity to get really immersed in this very special meadow, either in an artistic or more science based way.
OR
• Join Ruthie Martin by Butts Brow Car Park and create imaginative, tactile responses to the land and its sounds
🚶 12–1pm – Guided walk
Walk the Downland Art Trail: Explore a beautiful and thought-provoking trail of Eastbourne Downland-inspired artwork.
🎨 2pm – Afternoon artist workshops
Head to the artist you didn’t meet in the morning and try something new!
✨ All day:
• Chat with heritage and ecology experts (and handle local ancient artefacts!)
• Try your hand at fleece felting, immersion meditation and prehistoric style chalk carving
• Find out how you can help care for this rare and beautiful landscape
