What began as an act of love has grown into a powerful movement of community. For two decades, the Ava Jo & Durron Neighborhood Backpack Giveaway Festival has stood as a beacon of what it means to care for Our people, build from the grassroots, and affirm the dignity of every child and family in Our neighborhood. It is a living symbol of Black self-determination and resistance—a bold declaration that in the face of disinvestment and gentrification, We are still here, building the Beloved Community Block in Detroit.
Renamed to honor Ava Jo, a Black mother whose strength, love, and sacrifice birthed generations of resilience—and Durron, a beloved son taken too soon whose spirit continues to guide Us—this annual event is far more than a backpack giveaway or a block party. It is a declaration: We matter. Our neighborhood matters. We will not be bulldozed or erased. Development will not be imposed on Us—We are developing from within.
This Festival is about reclaiming space—about showing what joy, public safety, and authentic community development actually look like. It’s about pouring real love into Our children and families, giving them a day where they are seen, celebrated, and surrounded by care. A day filled with live entertainment, bounce houses, free food, healing spaces, game trucks, and this year—We’re excited to introduce the Youth Self-Care as part of the experience.
Over the years, the Festival has become a staple in Zone 8, drawing elders, youth, artists, educators, organizers, and neighbors from across Michigan and even out of state. From school supplies and community resources to Black joy and collective transformation—this is where love shows up loud and unapologetic.
This year marks 20 years—and We’re not just honoring the past. We’re investing in Black futures. Join Us as We turn grief into action, legacy into purpose, and Our block into sacred ground.
Because when We say, “Restoring the Neighbor Back to the ’Hood,” We mean it.
