“Now and then we had a hope that if we lived and were good, God would permit us to be pirates.” So said Mark Twain in his “Life on the Mississippi.”
If you are an aspiring pirate, if you enjoy the wit and wisdom of Samuel Langhorne Clemens (aka Mark Twain), or if you delight in a night at the theatre, rejoice! Your wishes are granted.
On Wednesday, July 2nd, from 6:30 to 8:30 PM, professional actor Ray Carver will perform, “Life on the Mississippi: An Evening with Mark Twain” at T-Bock’s Upstairs, 206 W. Water St. The Des Moines Register, in reviewing Carver’s performance as Twain, said, “A wonderful evening…To read the words written by Samuel Langhorne Clemens is a pleasure. To hear them spoken by a talented performer like Carver is a special joy.” Those who attended Carver’s December 7th performance as Charles Dickens in “A Christmas Carol” can attest to his skill as an actor and can look forward to another superb performance. For those who haven’t seen him perform, you are in for a treat!
Ray Carver has a long history of work in the theatre, from acting (he appeared in Steven Spielberg’s film, “Lincoln”), to founding theatres, directing plays, doing set design, working with young people in after-school theatre programs, and authoring many plays. Three of these, based on works of Mark Twain, are part of the Mark Twain Boyhood Home Museum in Hannibal, Missouri.
Tickets for this one night only performance are $15 per person and are available at Kanpai Soda Shop, 404 W. Water St.; Decorah Area Chamber of Commerce, 507 W. Water St.; Dragonfly Books, 112 W. Water St.; and Winneshiek County Historical Society, 302 S. Mill St. during regular business hours. Seating is limited so the public is encouraged to purchase your tickets soon before they sell out. Chairlift access to the second floor is available for those requiring assistance. Doors will open at 6 PM on the night of the performance, with seating on a first-come, first-served basis.
This event is being presented by the Winneshiek County Historical Society and co-sponsored by the Oneota Valley Literary Foundation.
