Darien Library and Barrett Bookstore invite you to an evening with author J. Courtney Sullivan to discuss her new book, The Cliffs. She’ll be in discussion with local writer Page Berger. The Cliffs was the Reese’s Book Club selection for July 2024.
About the Book
Sullivan returns to Maine with the story of Jane who discovers that her teenage sanctuary—an abandoned Victorian house—has been gutted to a “glossy white monstrosity.” As she’s running away from a terrible mistake that threatens her marriage and career, Jane is hired by the new owner to investigate if the house is haunted.
The story Jane uncovers—of lovers lost at sea, romantic longing, shattering loss, artistic awakening, historical artifacts stolen and sold, and the long shadow of colonialism—is even older than Maine itself.
Enthralling, richly imagined, filled with psychic mediums and charlatans, spirits and past lives, mothers, marriage, and the legacy of alcoholism, this is a deeply moving novel about the land we inhabit, the women who came before us, and the ways in which none of us will ever truly leave this earth.
The Cliffs is a perfect tale for fans of the book and film, “Practical Magic.”
Sullivan was the 2019 Darien Library Novel Tea author.
