Stratification: Archaeology of the Everyday

Stratification turns to the layers that accumulate beneath visibility: residues of use, care, neglect and time. This sub-thematic lens considers how histories settle unevenly within architectural structures and how meaning can be uncovered through what lies below the surface.

In this workshop, artist Sheldon Saliba invites participants to inhabit the role of archaeologists of the future looking back at the present. Guided through the Palace’s historic wells and surrounding spaces, attendees will explore how objects, sediments and architectural traces register shifting human and ecological histories. Saliba expands his practice-as-research by using the sites referenced in his installations as entry points for examining how matter accumulates, circulates or disappears across time.

Please note that the museum will not be accessible during this workshop and that some workshop locations will not be accessible to those with limited mobility.

This event forms part of the public programme of Moving with the Wind, Like Waves, a site-specific project unfolding across an exhibition, publication and series of activations at the Inquisitor’s Palace. The project is developed and curated by Elyse Tonna and commissioned and supported by the Bank of Valletta Foundation.
