This workshop is for people who want to convert a sunny, relatively dry piece of their lawn into a small meadow of tough grasses and wildflowers that are native to Westchester County and the surrounding area. The backbone of the meadow will be a matrix of several different warm season grasses: little bluestem, broomsedge, purpletop and switchgrass. These top out at 3 to 4 feet when in bloom, as do many of the wildflowers that will also be part of the mix such as beardtongue, bergamot, goldenrods and asters. A lower layer of ground-hugging plants like violets and wild strawberries will fill in the spaces between the taller plants and suppress weeds. In addition to providing year-long beauty and visual interest, your pocket meadow will attract pollinating insects and birds to your yard.
Participants are invited to a Zoom meeting on Sunday, March 2nd (10:00-10:40 A.M.) to view a slideshow of the plants and the planting plan, and learn about site preparation. For those unable to attend the Zoom, the slideshow will be available for independent viewing. The on-site workshop will take place at 456 Croton Ave in Cortlandt Manor on Sunday, June 29th at 8:30am. At this time participants will receive and transplant into trays the approximately 80 seedlings that will populate their meadows. The recommended time frame after that is to maintain the young plants in their trays until September, and plant them in the ground once the weather has begun to cool off.
Also check out other Workshops in Cortlandt Manor.
