Master Artist David Comingdeer to Present Cherokee Stickball and Host Community Game
Sunday, June 8, 2025 | 2:00–4:00 p.m. | Tiawah, OK
CLAREMORE, OK — The Rogers County Cherokee Association (RCCA) welcomes the public to a special event celebrating the Cherokee social game of stickball, led by Cherokee National Living Treasure David Comingdeer, on Sunday, June 3, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the RCCA Community Center, 15488 East 523 Road, Claremore, OK 74019.
Comingdeer, a Cherokee Nation citizen from the Flint District and a master stickmaker for more than three decades, will present the history and cultural significance of stickball, also known as "the Little Brother of War." A hands-on community game will follow his remarks—open to all ages, with plenty of laughter encouraged.
Recognized in 2014 as a Cherokee National Living Treasure and recently named a 2025 Taproot Artist Fellow, Comingdeer has carved traditional hickory ball sticks for numerous tribal nations and public schools across the region. He remains dedicated to passing on his skills to future generations.
The afternoon begins with a build-your-own sandwich bar hosted by RCCA starting at 1:00 p.m., followed by a prayer at 1:45 p.m. and a brief business meeting led by RCCA President Cathy Grissett.
Additional Highlights:
Door prize drawings throughout the afternoon
Remarks from any Cherokee Nation Tribal Councilors in attendance
Opportunity to learn and play the traditional game of Cherokee stickball
RCCA monthly meetings are free and open to the public (except September and December). Annual memberships are available at $10 for individuals or $25 per household.
