I plan for us to catch a Sunset and then just after sunset trying to catch the Crescent Moon as it appears and then sets at the end of the walk.
This means running the walk on the 26th June, 1 day after the New Moon which is at 11:31 on 25th June.
The plan is to meet in the local pub in Old Sodbury (The Dog Inn, BS37 6LZ) to leave for the walk at 9pm. Those who arrive before this time can grab a quick drink, chat, weather check in the pub, before leaving for the short 3 mile walk.
(Please comment on the event discussions if you plan to grab food in the pub before, others may wish to join you)
I am planning to firstly get us to Old Sodbury Church to catch the Sunset at 9:31pm. After sunset I am hoping that we see the very thin Crescent Moon appear.
Once we find the Crescent moon we walk across fields to Little Sodbury Church, for a quick stop and hopefully Bat spotting and other wildlife. We then walk up hill through an orchard for Stargazing at the Old Sodbury Roman Camp (Iron Age Hill Fort).
(Bring binoculars or a telescope if you wish, just remember you'll be carrying it on the walk).
This walk could be pitch black by the end of it so I recommend people bring torches (Red light torches are better for your stargazing eyes). At stages of the walk I will ask people to turn them off so we can see what we can see. (Or not see)
Please bring warm clothes as we could hang around at the Hill Fort some time if the stars are amazing. Also this route could be muddy in quite a few places so you may want a change of shoes.
On our way back, if we have the clear skies, I am hoping we catch the Crescent Moonset (devil horns) at 11:05pm.
Finally, I plan to be finished and back at the pub car park by midnight.
There's potentially the chance of cattle (sheep, cows and horses) on this walk. So, not suitable for dogs.
Disclaimer: I am not qualified in first aid so people are taking these walks at their own risk.
