Public Housing: Some Surprising History with Tom Hanchett

Historian Tom Hanchett delves into one thread of his new book Affordable Housing in Charlotte. We’ll start with the invention of subsidized housing in the 1930s-1940s. Then look at how a 1990s program called HOPE VI brought dramatic improvements — while displacing some residents. Finally, we’ll ask how history shapes affordable housing issues today.
Dr. Hanchett is a community historian who works with neighborhood groups in Charlotte. Educated at Cornell, University of Chicago and UNC Chapel Hill, he is author of a history book about Charlotte, Sorting Out the New South City, as well as his new book Affordable Housing in Charlotte.
