📚 Lecture: “Surreal Escape: Surrealist Artists and World War II”

🎤 Speaker: Professor JR Pepper

Join us for a captivating talk with Professor JR Pepper as she delves into the Surrealist art movement during a perilous time in history. As a response to the Great War and the rise of impending hostilities leading to World War II, many Surrealist artists were forced to escape their homes under dire circumstances.

During this presentation, we will explore how Nazi persecution and the labeling of these creators as ‘degenerate artists’ compelled them to seek asylum in Mexico and the United States. JR will highlight several artists whose lives and works were profoundly impacted by the looming threat of war and the dramatic changes they faced along their journeys.

Prof. JR Pepper is a Brooklyn-born photographer and lecturer specializing in Surrealism and the history of photography. Her unique work in spirit photography has been featured in Vice.com and Musee Magazine. With over two decades of experience, she also teaches art history at Brooklyn College and is the author of the newly published book Buried Boston.

Don’t miss this opportunity to gain insight into the lives of Surrealist artists during World War II!
